The approval of the Valley View Student Handbook drew controversy over co-curricular participation standards that some say are too low. The presses are ready to roll on new student handbooks for the 2010-11 school year, following formal approval of their content at a recent school board meeting. But a revision may be in the works. The student handbook states that those who wish to participate in co-curricular activities must maintain a grade point average of 1.5, which is the standard set by the State of Illinois.
At the suggestion of board members Richard Gougis and Mike Evans, the board will discuss the possibility of raising minimum-grade-point standards for students who want to participate in co-curricular activities.
Evans said the current standard of a 1.5 GPA “is absolutely pathetic.” “I do think it’s too low, for a couple reasons," Gougis said." Co-currics motivate many kids and they will achieve the standards set to participate." He further explained that the National College Athletic Association requires a 2.0 GPA as an eligibility requirement for collegiate sports. “The 1.5 GPA is the minimum set by the state,” said Gougis. “We need to set standards that reflect our values and not simply adopt the state's minimum — not just in this area, but all areas.” The plan going forward is to open some discussion with the community, sponsors, coaches and students and then bring the matter back to the board to make a formal decision. Superintendent Dr. Phillip Schoffstall said the timing on making such a change for this school year would be difficult to do within the eight-week time frame before school starts, but was not out of the question.
School officials said the board intends to examine where the grade point average should be set after reviewing all facets of the issue, which may be discussed at a future board meeting.
