As a budding entrepreneur 14 years ago, Mark Miller saw an opportunity that sparked his passion for getting parents and their children together to have a little fun, and the opportunities keep continuing.
On a trip to Lamb’s Farm in Libertyville with his daughter Alexis, now 16, Miller saw a tennis game played without using an actual tennis court, with moms and dads, daughters and sons all having fun. Those were the keys — fun family togetherness. He set out on a mission to start a program that opened up that world: simple, fun sports that a family participated in as a team.
Miller’s idea struck a cord with those parents toting a mix of ages, 3 to 8 years old, and now Mark Miller’s Munchkin Programs are well-known in park districts and community centers throughout Will County, promoting family togetherness through hands-on interaction.
There are a variety of sports programs including tennis, soccer and Nerf football. Munchkin programs are designed to educate and work directly with each child while offering parents the opportunity to interact with their child in a relaxed and entertaining environment.
Now Miller is looking to expand his programs to work with children with disabilities and is pursuing a grant with the United States Tennis Association to partner with churches in the area.
“My passion is 'parent and me' programs where you can see the parents and kids spending quality time together through sports, and there is a great need for a program like this for kids with disabilities,” said Miller.
Miller’s goal is to hire youth pastors/children’s ministers across the country to run his program at their local churches. He would like the program to include his 30-minute “Parent and Me” program and then an hour of socialization, giving children with disabilities a chance to interact with their peers and parents a chance to mingle.
